Sandblasting is process which strips down paint, rust or anything else from surface. If grain is bigger you don’t strip paint off but the effect is less and less strong so eventualy you start to clean surface.

Sandblasting is slighty different form shot peening. Shot peening uses round grain while sandblasting uses grains which has sharp edges.
Sandblasting is nowadays best procedure to prepare surface for repainting. Media that is being blasted towards surface makes perfoct coating for paint to grip better on surface which extends the time before next repaining is needed.
It is also one of best way to clean up different objects, like rustes objects, graffities on the wall and more.
